How to choose an SEO agency for AEO visibility
Seven questions that show, before you sign, whether an agency can move your visibility in AI answers.
- Ask for a baseline first: how often AI answers mention you today, on which engines, against which competitors.
- Prefer agencies that work on retrieval and entities, and can explain the mechanism in plain words.
- Judge proof by figures with periods, and check that no engagement is presented twice.
- Expect a paid entry audit, then a scoped program. Treat guaranteed AI mentions as a warning sign.
An agency that can improve your visibility in AI answers should be able to show you, before you sign, how often those answers mention you today and how it will measure the change. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is young, and the word now appears on many SEO offers. The seven questions below help you check whether the work behind it has changed, and compare agencies on evidence.
1. Can they measure your AI visibility today?
Start here. Ask the agency to show your current visibility on a fixed set of prompts your buyers use, on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, against your main competitors. A serious agency has the tooling to produce that baseline quickly, and treats it as the reference for every report that follows.
Listen for the details: how the prompt set is chosen, how often it is measured, and whether results are split by engine. A single “AI visibility score” with no method behind it tells you little.
2. Do they work on retrieval, or only on pages?
Answer engines retrieve sources before they write an answer, often by splitting your buyer’s question into many smaller searches, known as fan-out queries. An agency that understands this works on the inputs: the entities your brand is connected to, the questions behind each prompt, and the sources engines already trust. If you want the background first, George Chrysochou explains what answer engine optimization is and how engines choose sources.
What answer engine optimization isAsk the agency to walk you through one fix and why it would change an answer. Good answers name a mechanism. Weak answers name a deliverable.
3. What proof can they show?
Ask for results with a figure, a starting point and a period: citation share from 6% to 34% in six months tells you something, “significant growth” does not. Clients under NDA can be described by industry, and that is normal.
Then check the proof for double counting. If a named client and an anonymous “B2B platform” turn out to be the same engagement, the track record is smaller than it looks. We apply that rule to our own pages: each engagement appears once per page, named or anonymous, never both.
4. Do they build or own their tools?
AEO depends on measurement across engines and prompts, and on research at a scale manual work cannot reach. Agencies that build their own tools can track what matters to your program instead of what an off-the-shelf dashboard happens to show. Ask what the tools measure, who uses them and how long they have been in production.
5. How will they report?
A monthly report should show AI visibility, search performance and business results side by side, against the baseline from question 1, with the work done that month and the plan for the next. Our guide to AEO and SEO reporting lists what to expect.
What good AEO and SEO reporting looks like6. Who does the work?
Ask who leads your program by name, what their own track record is, and which roles sit behind them: strategy, content, technical, outreach. If you have an in-house team, ask how the agency will brief and train it, and how it checks the pages your writers publish.
7. How do they price it?
A paid entry audit followed by a scoped program is a healthy sign: the agency prices the work after it understands your position. Be wary of fixed packages that promise a number of AI mentions. Generated answers change with every model update, so an honest agency commits to the work and the measurement, and shows what changed each month.
A checklist for the call
| Question | A strong answer | A weak answer |
|---|---|---|
| Can you measure our AI visibility today? | A baseline by engine and prompt, against named competitors | A single score, or “we will set that up later” |
| How does your work change an answer? | Retrieval, fan-out queries, entities, cited sources | A list of deliverables |
| What proof can you show? | Figures with start points and periods, each engagement once | Logos and adjectives |
| Which tools do you use? | Their own tracking plus established tools | A dashboard they cannot explain |
| How will you report? | Monthly, against the baseline, with work done and next steps | Rankings only |
| Who does the work? | A named lead and clear roles | “Our team” |
| How do you price it? | A paid audit, then a scoped program | Guaranteed AI mentions |

The AI visibility auditQuestions
What should I look for in an AEO agency?
A baseline of your AI visibility before you sign, a method that works on retrieval and entities, proof with figures and periods, its own tooling, monthly reporting against the baseline, a named lead and a paid audit before a scoped program.
Is an SEO agency enough for AEO?
Only if it measures AI answers and changes its work for them. Ask question 1 above: an agency that cannot show your current AI visibility is still doing SEO alone.
